Is the training worth it? Why is it so expensive?:
The way I see it is that getting trained to tattoo is like going to college or trade school - its an investment in hopes that you will get a career out of it. It is only worth it if you have plans for what you will do with this training after, and work your hardest to get to your full potential.
Fineline tattooing can be VERY good money, but that all depends on how much effort you put into building your skills, appropriate pricing, social media presence, good communication, and how often you take clients.
You have the potential to make 6 figures a year, if you really work towards it.
Is tattooing right for me? Pros and cons:
Are you wondering if this path is right for, or if you have what it takes? Here is what I have to say about it.
If you are creative, meticulous, artsy, alternative, communicative, and hard working then tattooing might be a good option for you!
Tattooing takes time and repetition to build your skill set and to get comfortable. It can also be very nerve racking to tattoo permanently onto someone. You have to be the type of person who is dedicated to getting through the first few months of discomfort and put in the hard work to build your skills.
Being able to draw is a plus, but you can always learn to draw as you go.
It’s also important to have good eye sight or corrective lenses and a steady hand. Your hand muscles will build over time so its okay if you haven’t gotten the hang of it right away. If you have bad eyesight then I recommend going to get your eyes checked before the training.
Tattooing is hard on the body. Your back, neck, and hands can get very sore - especially after a full day of working. We spend a lot of time hunched over and in funky positions to be able to tattoo all parts of the body. Time management, massages and chiropractic can help with this but if you already have problems with those areas of the body then this isn’t the best career for you.
Another aspect that people don’t think about as much is energy and communication skills. With tattooing, you are meeting so many new people all of the time. Sometimes several new people a day. You will have people wanting to tell you their whole life story or describe the deep meanings of their tattoos. Good communication, bedside manner and professionalism is crucial for this role. It is important to recognize that this can be emotionally exhausting as well as rewarding.
